ask a dub acquaintance this and see if they have anything resembling a rational answer:.

you: when you're at a public event and the announcer says, "please rise for the playing/singing of the national anthem," you refuse to stand because that would be considered an act of nationalistic worship, correct?.

dub: correct.. you: why then, when a jw is in a courtroom and the baliff says, "all rise for the honorable judge whatsherface, court is now in session," do jws stand up?

OTWO has it, I think. It's another setup for an Us versus Them confrontation. Nothing but good can come out of it for the borg. Either the dub gets persecuted for not standing or they sit there feeling proud to be isolated from "the world."

dutchstef, I'm not talking about a flag, which is considered an idol by the borg, but rather a song. "Please stand to show respect to the country (superior authority) represented by this song." IDOLATRY! "Please stand for this human judge." HONOR THE SUPERIOR AUTHORITIES!

It's hypocrisy over minutae; the JWs are adept at this.

You: Why then, when a JW is in a courtroom and the baliff says, "All rise for the honorable judge Whatsherface, court is now in session," do JWs stand up? How is standing up NOT an act of worship towards the judge when simply standing up for a song IS?

Dub: Er, um, I'll have to check with my elders....

Dubs won't have to share magazines, they'll have to print their own. They're already available as pdf files; how long before they "encourage" the friends to only take the printed copies for the ministry and print out their own Kool Aid editions?

The History Channel actually said no one really knows?

It's kind of like saying that an execution in the old west may have been done by hanging but nobody really knows for sure whether the townfolk got together for a stoning instead.

The Romans executed using a cross or cross-like implement. There is no rational reason to think they may have used a single upright pole on this one occasion, is there? (I didn't see that History Channel show but I've never heard anyone outside the Dubs question that crosses were commonly used as implements of execution in the Roman empire.

even though i discovered it when i was already disfellowshipped and really didnt have the intention of going back, i was still a fierce jw apologist.

Absolutely a great site.

For someone like me, it's perfect. I think Paul makes a valid point that it probably isn't enough for a lot of Dubs. It's just one tool in the toolbox. If one can learn to understand the way the cult works and how to overcome cult mind control, jwfacts.com becomes a weapons cache that one can use to blow 'the troof' out of the water.

i've always been a person who 'needed to know'.

as a born in i felt incredibly lucky that my parents and grandparents had found 'the truth' - no need to struggle to 'break free from babylon's bondage' for me!

To answer your question, Sapphy, "How did you cope & resolve the big questions for yourself?" I would say that I honestly haven't resolved anything but I cope by feeling like the answers aren't important to me. There is a lot to think and feel and do outside of spiritual pursuits and the JW faith has kept me and my family from thinking, feeling, and doing most of them.

I have a lot of lost time to make up for and I'm going to enjoy it.

Will I ever get to know who God really is and if He really exists as an entity? I don't know and I don't care. If he feels it's important to make himself known to me, he will. If it isn't important to him then why should I worry about it?

When the NT references the "word of God" what is it referring to?

the nt references the 'word of god' in a number of places.

(for example: hebrews 4:12-the word of god is alive and exerts power and is sharper than a two-edged sword).

it can't be referring to the ot and the mosaic law because those authors writing after jesus's death were trying to put away the old law traditions, and it can't be referring to any of the nt books because many were not even written yet or known to be scripture per se.

I'm with PSac. In the NT, the Word of God is Jesus Christ himself.

"The word of God is alive and exerts power..." Jesus.

As for Paul's "All Scripture" quote, I don't think there is any record of what the 1st century Christians considered to be true Scripture and what wasn't. I think a good guess would be that they would have accepted much of what we now consider the Old Testament, if not all of it, in addition to probably several lost or 'apocryphal' books, too. I don't think there's any way of knowing.

Frankly, there's no way of knowing that Paul actually ever wrote those words, since his original letters do not exist.

I, for one, do NOT want them to change the policy for the better. I want the GB to go so completely batty with their insane policies that the organization collapses from mass exodus and lack of support. This organization is NOT reformable. There is NO hope for it.

Which Websites Helped You Leave the WT?

it is an excellent read.

i even wrote to the guy, james caputo, to show appreciation for his courage to post his story on the www all those years ago when there weren't yet a ton of ex-jw sites.

I started out with Robert King's e-watchman site. It seemed palatable at the time because he nominally still supported JW doctrine while exposing what he perceived as errors. From there, his discussion board where there are many nice and intelligent people, not all of whom buy into the beliefs posited in his book. It was instrumental because I wasn't ready to oppose the borg at the time and his site claims to be pro-JW.

But it's mostly hokum.

So, if one is truly ready to investigate the truth sites like his aren't necessary. Just go to www.jwfacts.com for the nitty gritty details and to freeminds for the experiences. And of course, come here.
